Emergency
Preparedness
Town of Wright, Schoharie County, NY
With winter and other potential disasters a possibility, it is a good idea to plan for the unexpected. The lists below will help you and your family cope in the event of a disaster where you may lose power and heat, or in the event you need to evacuate your home.
The most important task of all is to plan now while you have time to think and prepare. Trying to stay organized and focused in the midst of an emergency is a difficult task for anyone. We suggest you take care of the following now:
Prepare a phone list of close family and friends and make sure each of your family has one
Designate a relative or friend outside of the area who would be the contact if family members get separated and cannot contact one another.
Keep essential prescriptions and medical records together in an accessible location
Can you identify two routes to get to our local Red Cross Shelter?
Identify any neighbors that may need your help in the event of an emergency
Keep some cash in a secure location for gas, food, and medical needs in case of evacuation
Keep at least ½ tank of fuel in your car at all times
Determine what to do with pets – they are not allowed in Red Cross Shelters
Know where the Red Cross Shelters are:
Gallupville Gospel Church -Rt 443, Lutheran Church - Rt 443 and the
Gallupville House - Rt 443. (Typically shelters will be opened in that order) |
Here are some items you want to prepare and have on hand in case bad weather or a disaster keeps you at home without power for an extended period. These items should be put in a separate dry, location and refreshed at least once a year.
Battery powered radio | |
Flashlights | |
Fresh batteries for radio and flashlights

Set aside supplies for infants including formula, bottles, diapers, etc.
At least a two week supply of food for your pets
Have a back-up heat source or know where you can go for heated shelter
Clean water (one gallon per person per day) Note: Water can be purified using one scant teaspoon of bleach per 5 gallons of water
If you have a generator, make sure you have gas, oil – and it starts!
Set aside a supply of personal care products
(ex. toiletries, first aid supplies) |
If you have to leave your home, planning ahead is absolutely critical. Here are some tips:
